Last week, committees in both the House and Senate held several hearings focused on health care costs, insurance coverage, and financing. On Tuesday, February 5th, the Senate HELP Committee’s hearing “How Primary Care Affects Healthcare Costs and Outcomes”, highlighted the challenges many Americans face in gaining access to affordable health care. Health centers were a hot topic for Members who attended this hearing, and received praise for their work in providing low-cost primary healthcare to patients. In particular, Chairman Alexander (R-TN) and Ranking Member Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) noted that investing in health centers would be instrumental in lowering health care costs for patients. On Wednesday, February 6th, the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health held a hearing to discuss the impacts of the ACA and Medicaid expansion and Members also acknowledged the work of health centers. In particular, Rep. Ruiz (D-CA) discussed how a health center in his district has been critical to HIV/AIDs treatment in the area. It is encouraging to see that Congress recognizes the positive contributions of health centers during discussions on the topic of health care reform!
